Av Atlantic was formed as HCL Aviation, a commercial operator using business jets and transport aircraft. In 1991, the company received its air carrier certificate and started charter service with B-727 aircraft the next year. Much of Av Atlanic's business was sub-service work for foreign carriers or for airlines that needed temporary aircraft. Av Atlantic was grounded by the FAA during May 1996 due to inadequate flight attendant training and again on March 7, 1997 over operational and record keeping problems. The company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy on March 12 and filed Chapter 7 shortly thereafter at which time it was liquidated.
